Democrats promise to improve the economy by investing in education, helping small businesses grow, and raising the minimum wage. They want to close tax loopholes for large corporations, raise taxes on the very wealthy, and provide workers with paid sick leave. This will help keep more money in the pockets of those who need it most. Democrats also believe access to healthcare is a fundamental right and they will not allow insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies to profit off the backs of hard-working Americans any longer. They want to lower prescription drug prices and provide Medicare for all – so we can live without fear of losing everything if we get it. On the other hand, The cons of the Democratic Party are that the Democratic Party’s tax plan increases taxes on the nation’s top earners and businesses, which impacts Americans. The Democratic Party’s policies have a negative impact on the country’s economy because they’re too extreme.
Pros and Cons Of Democrats – The Comparison Table
Serial | Pros Of Democrats | Cons Of Democrats |
1. | Democratic Party members have fought for equality. They have been involved in movements to liberate human slaves from those who own them, as well as that “freed” slaves from unfair Jim Crow laws. | Republican President Donald Trump is the wealthiest man ever to serve in the White House and ran on a message of helping working-class people. |
2. | For decades, Democrats have fought for women’s rights and equality. This includes voting rights for women starting in the 1920s which long was denied to them by Republicans. The Democratic Party is responsible for much of what Americans take for granted today, including Social Security which provides retirement security, Medicare which ensures medical care needs are covered in old age (and which Republicans are trying to destroy), the federal highway system, and more. | Donald Trump also broke his promise of “draining the swamp” by working with lobbyists and politicians who have been corrupt for years. |
3. | Democrats have made major contributions to science – most notably Nobel Prize-winning scientists in recent decades. Al Gore is an example of a prominent Democrat who is also very involved in environmental issues. The Environmental Protection Agency was created by Republican Richard Nixon but became a major force under Democrat Barack Obama. | Republican president George W. Bush is responsible for the Great Recession and 9/11 which resulted in thousands of Americans losing their jobs and homes. |
4. | Democrats have played key roles in creating modern America’s infrastructure, such as railroads and highway systems. Democrats today support high-speed rail which is designed to reduce pollution and traffic while increasing the mobility of the population. The president who made this possible was Republican Dwight Eisenhower (who created an effective national highway system) but Democrats have continued to support building modern high-speed rail systems for America that are often opposed by Republicans. | Democratic president Barack Obama allowed private insurance companies to continue their corruption and force Americans to pay more money for medical services despite promising that health care would be affordable if he was elected. Obama failed to close Guantanamo Bay prison despite promising to do so and allowed the NSA to spy on millions of Americans (including Donald Trump) in violation of their rights. |
5. | Public schools and universities would not be as good without liberal Democrats. In many states, teachers’ unions that fight for effective public education, are banned due to so-called “right to work” laws that conservative Republicans passed. | Barack Obama caused an increase in violent crime when his policies empowered criminals, which led to the murder rate increasing every year he was in the office except for one. |
6. | The Affordable Care Act, which is known as Obamacare, was proposed by Democrat President Barack Obama and provides better health care to millions of Americans at a lower cost. Americans are now protected from unfair insurance practices, can keep their children on policies until age 26 years old, are guaranteed free preventative services such as cancer screenings, and many more. | However, Donald Trump has chosen several billionaires and millionaires to work at his cabinet positions and signed a tax bill that will not only give him tax cuts while still in office but also raises taxes on most Americans after 2025. |
7. | Democrats historically have fought for labour unions to help workers receive fair pay scales and better working conditions. This started with the first major general strike of women garment workers in New York City, out of which grew the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) which is still active today. | The national debt increased by $10 trillion under Obama, and his healthcare bill was a disaster with premiums increasing by $4,940 for customers on non-group/employer health insurance plans in 2016. |
8. | The AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) is the largest federation in the country for unions, but many smaller ones exist throughout America. | W. Bush was also a factor that led to higher oil prices and his war in Iraq also created ISIS and cost thousands of lives (including the nearly 4,500 American soldiers who died). |
9. | Democrats fought for civil rights starting with President Harry Truman who desegregated the military in 1948 (which Republicans like Strom Thurmond strongly opposed). Democrats today continue to fight for civil rights, including LBGT rights.
10. | Democrats fought against segregation in the South and decades of unfair treatment of African-Americans by Jim Crow laws which were racist. Democrat President Lyndon Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that enabled millions of blacks to begin voting (something they had been denied before due to unfair voter ID laws designed to prevent them from voting). LBJ also signed Executive Order 11246 which required affirmative action to create a more diverse workforce.
11. | Democrats have fought for affordable college tuition and got Republicans to sign off on a Democratic proposal that prevents student loan interest rates from rising.
12. | The first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives was Democrat Jeannette Rankin in 1917. The first woman elected to the U.S. Senate was Democrat Rebecca Felton, appointed by Georgia governor John M. Slaton which lasted for one day in 1922 before women were allowed to vote again (following the ratification of the 19th Amendment).
13. | Civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Democratic supporter who campaigned for Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960 and many other Democratic candidates before he was assassinated in 1968 by Republican James Earl Ray (who confessed but tried to claim innocence), following his support of Democrat Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights policies (he famously said “I have seen the promised land” after seeing images of the white and black children holding hands in 1963 at the March on Washington). |
