The town of Park City was founded in 1868. The town was known as the “Queen of the Canyons”. The town got its name from being located between two canyons. In 1885, the first hotel was built in Park City. In 1891, the Park City Ski Club was formed and became very popular. In 1897, the Ogden Union Railroad Company built a line through Park City and opened the mountain resort to tourists.
Park City was incorporated in 1900. The town grew rapidly. In 1914, the Park City Winter Sports Club was formed and started to build the Park City ski resort. In 1921, the town of Park City was incorporated into a city.
In 1923, the Ski Club built its first ski lift. In 1926, a new hotel was built in Park City called the Mariposa Hotel. The Mariposa Hotel became very popular and later became a famous hotel in Utah and America. In 1930, the ski club made improvements to the mountain and added more trails for skiers. The ski club also started to add new trails for bikers as well as snowshoeing.
Park City became very popular with tourists during the 1930s. In 1936, the ski club built a new lodge with dining rooms, a bar, and meeting rooms. In 1937, the ski club built a new hotel called the “Park City Hotel”. The hotel became very popular and later became known as the Park City Grand Hotel. The Park City Grand Hotel is still open today.
In 1941, the United States Olympic Committee selected the construction of an Olympic Center in Park City for the 1960 Winter Olympics. In 1955, Utah State University was formed and moved to Park City 1957. In 1962, a new airport was opened in Park City called Deer Valley Airport.
