Later, it became known as Sarasota and became an important port for cotton loading and trading.

The first person who made a mark in Sarasota was Dr William Englehardt. He founded the city of Sarasota after he bought a large tract of land from John Davis, and he developed it into a thriving town. When he died in 1891, his wife and son inherited his property; they continued to develop it into a prosperous town that became known as Sarasota.
