Tennessee became a part of the United States when Tennessee was divided into two states, North and South Carolina. The two states were separated because their population was very different from one another. The people in North Carolina were mainly English-speaking and they had a lot more slaves than those who lived in South Carolina. The land that is now known as Tennessee was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted and fished for food. They lived in the area for about 5,000 years.
